HEALTH FACILITIES: yes there are clinic at Enugu, Nsukka,and Oji River prison but they are mere consulting clinics with the regular drugs of paracetamol, multivte, B-complex etc .patience who cannot afford medical treatment are just allowered to die by installment and many have died helplessly. It is clear that those who cannot afford medical treatment outside the prison clinic and many can’t, are allowered to die. Outbreak of contagious or infectious disease spells doom to the prison environs and causes mass deaths. It is almost like the camel passing through the eye of a needle for a prisoner to be sent to hospital and given adequate medical attention.

 INADEQUATE   WATER   SUPPLY:    Expect at Ibite Olo prison, all the                other prisons are connected with pipe-borne water but the in-mates experience dry taps for days running into weeks. Enugu and Nsukka prisons are notorious for dry taps which has caused prison revolt.  A situation where in-mates live without water in a crowded environment for weeks usually heightens anxiety and risk of disease explosion in the yard..

GENERAL:     This is classified as personal  hygiene in the yard. Soap, toothpaste and tooth brush, detergents, towels, antiseptic etc are rarely used by the prisoners.   The worst affected are the female prisoners especially during menstruation.  Many who cannot afford the luxury of toilet tissue use rags.   Cases of fungi and other  micro organism infected diseases are rampant.   Bed bugs, lice, jigger, etc have friendly environment among the in-mate and thrives.   The health and personal hygiene of in-mates are neglected to such a magnitude that a first time visitor to the yard may cry.  Animals in the zoo are given better attention than prisoners in Nigeria.
