HIGHLIGHT ON FEMALE PRISONERS: This is important because of peculiar nature of women and they form a significant number in the population of prison yards under reference. These prisoners are subjected to four –day agony in every mouth during menstrual cycle. In this present age of modernity and globalization, female prisoners use every type of roughage. This is without consideration to the sophisticated nature of their body. There are cases of virginal candidiases and other infections rampant among the female folks in the prison. The undies are worn for over 4-5 years or as the case may be. These are worn without being washed or given adequate treatment. CONVICTS: These are prisoners who are convicted for one offence or the other in competent court of law and are serving the sentence. Any day that passes reduces the year of their stay in the prison. They live on the hope that some time, some day, they will regain their freedom after the completion of their term or under general amnesty.
- CONDEMNED CRIMINALS (CC): These categories of prisoners are as the name depicts are awaiting to be hanged by the hangman. There is a capital punishment and unless by the mercy of the president or divine intervention of God, their end is death. There are many in this category and are housed separately.
- AWAITING TRIAL MATES (ATM): These are the people who actually swelled the population of the prison yards. It is a case of hopelessness and total boredom. Their cases are still pending in different courts. Many have stayed upwards of 10 – 15 years far and above their sentences on conviction. Many people in this category are just paupers who cannot afford legal fees nor have access to legal aid. Many of them are suspected criminals without enough evidence to prosecute them by the police. Their cells are filled with heart rending tales and woes. It could be likened to a life without future and full of frustrations.
